At the pool of Salmacis, the son of Aphrodite and Hermes met a nymph who simply wouldn’t take “No” for an answer.
In this episode, we dive into the myth of Hermaphroditus and do our best not to go too deep. It’s a challenge, to be sure. More than any other myth in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the story of what happened at the pool of Salmacis is fraught with themes that most people aren’t used to exploring too closely.
The story is a palimpsest, a pentimento — symbols overlaid upon each other, intertwined . . . fused together, waiting to be decoded.
